Even though rumors continue of Apple building two models of the iPhone 6, a 4.7-inch model and a 5.5-inch model, we continue hearing that Apple won’t be able to launch both models at the same time. We’ve almost lost hope for a 4.7-inch model launching at WWDC in June, and instead we’re expecting it to launch for the holiday season. Still, rumors backed the 5.5-inch model to launch sometime by the end of the year as well, at least, until today.
It seems that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 phablet might be delayed, and it’s hard to predict if that means that we won’t see the device launching this year. Apparently there are issues with the design of this device, and it has to do mainly with the battery. When Apple launched the first-generation iPad mini, the company had to completely redesign the battery into a single-cell unit in order to make it fit within the housing, and it seems that this iPhone 6 phablet will need a unique battery as well.
Apparently Apple wants this device to be between 6.5mm and 7.0mm in thickness, which is much thinner than the current 7.6 mm thickness of the current iPhone 5s. To achieve this design, the battery would need to be 2mm thick, which is already a third thinner than the 2.8mm battery of the iPhone 5s as well.
Obviously the bigger the device, the bigger the battery it can fit, but it seems that Apple still wants to bet on a comfortable design through thinness, so let’s hope the company figures it out at some point.
