WhatsApp handles more than 50 billion messages daily; figure might exceed daily SMS volume

At the DLD conference currently being held in Germany (through Wednesday), the CEO of  cross-platform messaging app WhatsApp reported that his company now handles 54 billion messages a day. That works out to 36 billion outbound and 18 billion inbound messages handled daily. That is quite an impressive figure. And according to mobile analyst Benedict Evans, those figures probably surpass the number of daily SMS messages sent and received globally.

Evans also computes that WhatsApp has 430 million active monthly users, not bad for a company that has just 50 employees and has never spent one penny on advertising or promotion. Consider that back in April, Google allegedly offered $1 billion for the messaging app and that was well before WhatsApp had the kind of numbers that it has now.
