The European Parliament approved a
statutory law that will require all mobile device makers to use a
single, interoperable charger. The new legislation is taking Europe's
requirement that all mobile phones use the same charge port
(microUSB) a step further, expanding it to tablets. Member countries
of the European Union will have a two year term to internalize the
legislation, while manufacturers will have an additional year to
comply.
According to an estimate, the new law could help
European consumers save 300 million Euros annually, as well as to
reduce electronic and paper waste. Most manufacturers have already
established microUSB as the standard charging and data port for
devices, while Apple still refuses to do so. To appease EU authorities, it opted to supply an
external adapter with iPhones instead.
