Ever since the calendar flipped over to 2014 a few months back, we’ve been anxiously awaiting news of Microsoft completing its acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services branch – the one responsible for those Lumia smartphone we dig like we do. But even after getting all the regulatory approval they’d need, it’s felt like Microsoft and Nokia were dragging their feet a little in completing the deal; when would Nokia the smartphone company cease to exist as a separate entity and finally become bundled-up under the massive Microsoft umbrella? That day is nearly upon us, as this morning Microsoft announces that the deal will complete this week, going official this Friday, April 25.
Microsoft explains some of the issues that it’s been busy ironing out with Nokia, and presumably contributed to the finalization of this deal taking as long as it has. Those include details concerning the management of Nokia’s online assets, the fate of previous Nokia employees, and control over Nokia manufacturing facilities.
While Microsoft doesn’t mention it in today’s post confirming that April 25 date, a leaked memo from over the weekend reveals the new name Microsoft seems to be going with for its new acquisition: goodbye, Nokia, hello, Microsoft Mobile.
